The Cardboard Tubes is a Detroit area comedy band consisting of Dave Hornstein and Craig Schenk a/k/a Schenkenstein Monster.  They play original songs, spoken word pieces and instrumentals, as well as song parodies and covers, using a wide variety of musical styles.  Their performances include jokes, puns, props, puppetry, pantomime, sound effects, sight gags and the use of a variety of accents by both members,

Dave Hornstein is a professional writer and editor who has worked in journalism, public relations, corporate communications and technical writing.  Before all of that, he used to be a lawyer, but we all make mistakes, as he disclosed in his spoken word piece, "My Biggest Mistake."

Dave has written song lyrics off and on since he was in high school, but only started performing these songs and spoken word pieces around 2007.  He now writes most of the Cardboard Tubes material.  Dave sees life through an absurdist lens, knowing that our sense of humor is what enables us to maintain our sanity in this insane world.  He has no sacred cows, appreciates all forms of comedy, and has broad musical tastes.

Dave is the Cardboard Tubes' lead vocalist and lyricist, and plays such instruments  as bongos, harmonica, maracas, kazoo, flex-a-tone, cardboard tubes and whistle.

Craig Schenk a/k/a Schenkenstein Monster combines versatile musicianship with an appreciation for comedy.  He's never met a keyboard he didn't like and plays a wide variety of percussion instruments, some of which he has invented, using repurposed found objects.  Craig is also the Cardboard Tubes' backup vocalist.

Craig arranges the music, and his musical interests include jazz,  avant-garde music, old-school electronic music, and multi-cultural percussion music, especially Indonesian, African, Brazilian and Pre-Columbian, mixed with rock, psychedelic and jazz fusion.  He has previously played  in an improvising band, The Zulu Brake Torque Society, as well as Mutatis Mutandis, a punk/poetry/fusion/rock band.

Craig creates comedy character voices fit for cartoons, movies, TV and  radio, and has  improvised puppet characters.  He enjoys comedy sound effects and music, as well as pure silliness, lunacy, physical comedy and whatever comes to mind spontaneously.

Craig also creates collages, one of which is the cover of the first Cardboard Tubes album, Old Enough to Know Better.
